The dam was finished in 1975. The construction of the Pivastuwmeer with a surface area of 12.5 km² was created.

With a height of 200 m it is one of the highest dams in Europe. The dam is 268 m long and 4.5 m thick at the top. At the base the dam is only 30m long and 36m thick. The foundation is 38 meters deep. 820,000 m³ of concrete and 5 million kg of steel were used for construction.

The location of the 16th century monastery of Piva would come under water after commissioning the dam, so the monastery was moved to higher ground about 3 km from its original location. 43° 16′ 20″ NB, 18° 50′ 30″ OL
