Proliferation means linguistic tampering or verbasting certain words or expressions by replacing them with words of the ruling elite. The term is widely used in relation to Brussels but can also be widely used.

The word has emerged as a result of the popular and filmed French play Le Mariage de Mademoiselle Beulemans (Dutch: The Marriage of Miss Beulemans of Brussels: The Traumifest of Mademoiselle Beulemans) written by Frantz Fonson and Fernand Wicheler in 1910 that A portrait of the Brussels-speaking French citizen population with its own language.
