The Spanish squadron 1 Asturum

Ala I Hispanorum Asturum was an auxiliary unit of the Roman imperial army of the quinquagenaria wing type.

It was recruited in the first century among the newly conquered people of Astures. Possibly it was transferred to Britania during the reign of Domitian, although the first reliable is from the year 98 during the reign of Trajan.

It had its headquarters in Condercum, the present Bernwell, from possibly the year 175 and safely from the year 205 until the end of the Roman occupation of Britain as part of the garrison of Hadrian's Wall. It appears mentioned like part of the army of Britania years 122, 124, 126, 158, 175, 200, 205 and 400.

The grave of a rider of this unit, named Victor of 20 years and originally from Mauritania, has been found in Arbeia, the current South Shields in Scotland.
