Barrier of Maeslant

The Maeslant barrier seen from the north

The Maeslantkering or barrier of Maeslant is a barrier against the storm surge located at the entrance to the port of Rotterdam (The Netherlands). It was built between 1991 and 1997 as the final stage of the Delta Plan.

On November 9, 2007, the gate was closed for the first time since its construction in the 1990s (except for previous tests) to address the emergency that constituted the advance of the "Tilo" storm, which it raised, at least on day 9, waves up to 3 meters high, causing evacuations in Great Britain and the Netherlands and alerts in Germany. To close the barrier it took about 2 hours.
