Cachua


The cachua or cashua (Quechua: qachwa, Cuzco-Collao pronunciation: [qaʃ.wa]) is the name given to a dance of indigenous origins that is typical of Bolivia, Ecuador, and Peru. The Chronicles describe this dance as a gallant that was practiced during the Inca period. Currently the instrumentation, choreography and musical accompaniment of this dance is different in all the regions where it is performed.

It is an Andean group dance that is performed during the carnival festival of San Sebastián in the district of Amantani, province of Puno, department of Puno. In local tradition, it is believed that this dance arose during the pre-Inca times.
