The Kingdom of Candia (in Italian: Regno di Candia) or Duchy of Candia (Ducato di Candia) was the name by which the island of Crete was known during the period when it was an overseas possession of the Republic of Venice, from the initial Venetian conquest in 1205-1212 until its fall to the Ottoman Empire during the Cretan War (1645-1669). The island was at that time, and until the early modern period, commonly known as Candia by its capital, Candia or Chandax (now Heraklion).
