Ibero-Roman settlement of Baecula

The Ibero-Roman city of Baecula is an old settlement located in the province of Jaén. Traditionally, it has been located in the surrounding lands of Bailén, although at present there is great confusion since recent studies have given the theory that it could be located in the small town of Santo Tomé.

In this municipality have been found numerous weapons as well as indications of a battle in its vicinity. Possibly, this evidence does not indicate that a city existed there.

Numerous weapons such as spears and arrowheads have also been discovered in the lands of Bailén, as well as more complex structures such as remains of ancient Roman villas in the Tuscan area, and cemeteries with Iberian, Punic and Roman remains in near Tuscan, whose objects date from the third century BC - II.

In addition to this, in the same municipality was an old Roman-Visigoth church, whose remains date back to the V-VI centuries.
