The Rhine Hernekanaal is an important channel between Duisburg and Herne in the German Ruhr area, which connects the Rhine and Dortmund Eemskanaal. The canal was built between 1906 and 1914 and was taken into use in 1916. In the 1980s it was broadened. The waterway follows the valley of the Emscher.
