In 1408 the house Holstein was in war with Margaretha and Erik VII of Denmark over the Duchy of Schleswig. In 1413 his mother carried over the regency. Through the Hanseatic city of Lübeck in 1417, there was a ceasefire between the warring parties, which was broken again in 1423. Hendrik died on May 28, 1427 at the Siege of Flensburg. He is buried in the St. Lauren church in Itzehoe, built in 1196.
