Cave of Montesinos

Entrance to the cave of Montesinos

The cave of Montesinos is a cave of natural origin located in the vicinity of the town of Ossa de Montiel in the province of Albacete (Spain). At the bottom of the cave there is a small lagoon formed by the rainwater filtered through its walls. It has been discovered through a series of experiments and tests that the water of that lagoon is communicated by underground currents with the natural park of Lagunas de Ruidera.

In the book Don Quixote de la Mancha, Miguel de Cervantes made Don Quixote descend to the back of the cave, staying deeply asleep for an hour, which seemed three days to the character, during which time he had the magical dream in which he finds himself with Montesinos, recurring character of the Castilian epic. This adventure of Don Quixote corresponds to chapters 22 to 24 of the second part of the novel.
