Esophageal gutter

The esophageal gutter is a conduit connecting the ruminant cardia to the entrance of the abomasum.

This gutter helps to prevent liquids from getting into the belly by leading them directly to the digestive tract. This is the case for small calves when they drink milk, but also adult cattle when they are very thirsty.

The esophageal gutter consists of two lips that meet when it is needed to form a duct.
