Gomer (Hebrew Bible)


Gomer (Hebrew: גֹּמֶר Gōmer) according to the list of people and Genesis 10: 2 was one of the seven sons of Japheth, and Noah's grandson. Besides Genesis, Gomer also comes to 1 Chronicles 1: 5,6 and in the Jewish Book of Jubilees. In these sources, he is the father of Askenaz, Rifath and Togarma.

According to Roman historian Flavius ​​Josephus, Gomer was the ancestor of the Gomerians, the Galatians, the Celts and the inhabitants of Wales (their language was originally called Gomeraeg).

The Hebrew name 'Gomer' is widely believed to refer to the Cimmerians who were traversed by the Eurasian steppe. This people fell in the late 7th century BC. Assyria, and was called the "Gimmerai" by the Assyrians. In the Akkadian, the Cimmerians were known as the Gimirru.
