Sumburgh Airport (IATA code: LSI, ICAO: EGPB) is the main airport serving the Shetland Islands in Scotland. It is located at the southern tip of the peninsula, 17 nautical miles (31 km) south of Lerwick. The airport is owned by Highlands and Islands Airports Limited (HIAL) and is serviced by Loganair (under the FlyBe franchise) as well as times seasonally by Atlantic Airways.
The airport is unusual, as it has a 550 m runway for helicopter landing instead of a regular heliport. The western end of Runway 09 intersects the A970 between Sumburgh and the north of the continent. Access is controlled by a level crossing with low barriers every time a flight is taking off or landing.
On 1 April 1995, the ownership of the company of the Civil Aviation Authority of the United Kingdom was transferred to the Secretary of State of Scotland and subsequently to the Scottish Ministers.
HIAL receives grants from Scottish ministers in accordance with Section 34 of the Civil Aviation Act 1982 and is sponsored by the Directorate General for Transport, which is one of the Scottish Government's Directorates of Finance and Sustainable Growth. Annual reports and accounts are presented to the Scottish ministers.
