A sponsored TLD (sponsored TLD) or sponsored Internet domain is a generic Internet domain proposed by an independent agency or foundation, which establishes and applies the rules for opting into that domain. For example, the .aero domain has been sponsored by the Société Internationale de Télécommunications Aéronautiques, which limits registration under this domain to members of the air transport industry.

Some domains currently sponsored were initially unsponsored domains. This is the case for the .edu, .gov, .int, and .mil domains, but these domains are no longer managed by ICANN and operate under an agreement with this organization as well as sponsored domains.
