Illa of the Area

Illa de l'Aire is the name of an uninhabited island on the south coast of Minorca (Balearic Islands, Spain). The elongated island measures 3,438 km² and has a flat relief with a maximum height of 15 meters. Illa de l'Aire is located half a kilometer from the coast of Punta Prima, Sant Lluís town.

The island is known as the only place where the Sargantana Negro occurs, a very rare lizard species. The black lizard is one of the symbols of Minorca. The only building is a lighthouse, which marks the busy coastal route to and from Mao harbor, and the former lighthouse keeper's house. The island received the UNESCO biosphere status in 1993.
