Deng Yi fut un administrateur de la province de Jing pour Liu Biao.

He warned Liu Biao not to secretly establish links with Yuan Shao at the same time as sending messengers to pay tribute to Cao Cao. However, Liu Biao did not listen to his advice and Deng Yi resigned from his post, leaving Liu Biao at the same time.

In the year 208, Liu Biao died and Deng Yi, as Provincial Secretary, was given responsibility for Jiangling's defense with Liu Xian. However, they offered the city to Cao Cao and submitted when they echoed Liu Zong's death. He was then promoted Intendant of the Palace and served Cao Cao.
