kukryniksy

Kukryniksy (Кукрыниксы) was a group of three caricaturists from the Soviet Union.

His name is a combination of three artists: Mijaíl Kupriyánov (Михаил Васильевич Куприянов), Porfiry Krylov (Порфирий Никитич Крылов) and Nikolai Aleksandrovich Sokolov (Николай Александрович Соколов) who met at school Muscovite art VKhUTEMAS in the early 1920s. They began to use this joint name from 1924 onwards. They gained fame from the rise of fascism in Europe in the 1930s when, drawing for Krokodil, Moscow satirical newspaper attacked European fascist leaders. During World War II they created the TASS windows, a method of propaganda that was based on the distribution of political propaganda posters reproduced by stencil, following the model that had made before the war the ROSTA agency with its ROSTA windows. These posters had a clear graphic style and simple to understand, similar to a comic book. Kukriniski gave him an easily recognizable personal style.

They also illustrated some books, including Ilf and Petrov, and also made realistic socialist-style paintings of historical and political themes.

Individually they also painted landscape paintings and portraits.

The three were awarded the title of Artist of the People of the USSR in 1958, as well as other prizes and awards.
