Ménalo (city)


Ménalo is the name of an ancient Greek city of Arcadia.

According to Greek mythology its eponymous founder was Ménalo, and became the most famous city of Arcadia.

In quoted by Strabo, who mentions it among Arcadian cities from which you could barely find vestiges in its time and does not give details about its location.

Pausanias, meanwhile, mentions that in his time there were only ruins, remains of a temple of Athena, as well as an athletic stadium and a hippodrome.In the Ménalo region he locates the towns of Dipea, Licea, Orestasio, Asea, Palantio, Eutea, Sumatia, Yasea, Peretes and Helisonte, as well as the supposed Arcadian tomb. De Ménalo was a famous sculptor named Nicodamo, author of several statues of divinities and athletes who were in Olympia. The city also had several Olympic champions: Xenocles won in the infantile fight and Eutmens won in the fight of men and before in the one of children. In addition Nicodamo realized the statue of pancraciasta Andróstenes and the púgil Damoxénidas. Also noteworthy were Eucamidus and Hieronymus of Ménalo, who were among the founders of Megalopolis.

It has been suggested that it should have been close to the current population of Dasiá, north-west of Tripoli.
