Pontianak (demon)


Pontianak (Buntinganak) is a demon who is very feared on the Indian archipelago. She is usually presented as an old woman with low-lying breasts or as a beautiful young lady with long hairs that should cover a hole in her back.

Pontianak originated from a woman who died in the labor force (buntinganak: bunting (pregnant) + anak (child)). She is providing pregnant women and small children. Pontianaks with baby cry high in the trees are stepped up in the Louis Couperus novel De stille kracht (1900).
