Tonga Trench

Location of the Tonga-Kermadec moat off the coast of New Zealand. The Tonga Trench, also known as the Tonga-Trench or Tonga-Kermadec Trench, is an oceanic grave located in the Pacific Ocean, off the coast of the North Island of New Zealand and northwest of the Kermadec Islands , at the northern end of an active subduction zone of the Pacific plate. Its maximum depth is 10,882 meters, called Deep Horizon.

Convergence is occurring at an estimated rate of approximately 15 centimeters per year, however, recent measurements of global satellite positioning indicate in places of a convergence of 24 centimeters per year throughout the north of the Tonga, which is the fastest speed on the planet.

These oceanic trenches are important sites for the formation of what will be the continental crust and for the recycling of materials in the mantle. Bibliography
