Crystallizer

A crystallizer is a device in which a crystallization process can be performed. This means that crystals are produced from a supersaturated solution. There are many different types of crystallizers depending on the product to be produced. However, most crystallizers fall into well-defined categories.

An important consideration is whether the trial should be carried out batch or continuously. For the production of small batches, often less complex crystallizers are required. Batch processes are used at production rates up to 5 kton per year. This is usually the case for fine chemicals, nutritional additives and pharmaceuticals. Batch or continuous process is applied at production levels of 5 to 20 kton per year. Over 20 kton per year, continuous operation is economically the most attractive.

The three basic types of crystallizers for continuous production are:

All types of crystallizers are equipped with a heat exchanger that can have a cooling or heating function (the crystallization process is based on cooling or evaporation, respectively).
