report

Both Williams occupied the first run, but Heinz-Harald Frentzen left his engine off and had to start the race while the race had to be restarted. For him, the race did not take long: in the first round, Frentzen fought with Jos Verstappen and flew with a smooth tire from the track. The safety car had to be completed because Katardama's also crashed Minardi was still on the runway. Jacques Villeneuve led the race until he got trouble with a stuck wheel nut during a pit stop, which took him half a minute. As a result, Michael Schumacher led a generous lead of 40 seconds, but he had to give up with a wrecked wheel bearer. Villeneuve has now moved to position 2, right behind Mika Häkkinen. Picking up seemed to be a difficult task, but with another 8 laps, Fin's race ended with a blown engine so Villeneuve managed to drag his 10 wk points. Alexander Wurz proved his role as a striker at Benetton, third place behind team mate Jean Alesi. Damon Hill hit the hate zero by becoming sixth, helped by Shinji Nakano's failure in the final round.
