Elimination race

An elimination race is a type of race in which the competitors are eliminated until there is only one, who wins the race. Competitors are ranked in the reverse order of elimination. This format penalizes those who have problems in a timely manner, such as a slip or a blow.

In the cycling version on the track, the elimination is done every one or two laps, depending on the length of the track. The modality was added as one of the six events of the omnium test of the 2012 Olympic Games.

Inline skating speed skating, the final sprint in an elimination stroke is done with a larger number of skaters, usually 5 or 10. There are also combined races, which mix eliminations with a point system.

Some racing video games have elimination racing modes, including several Need for Speed, Burnout and Colin McRae Rally series. The elimination is done at every turn, in each sector of circuit or pre-established time.
