The Story of Maths

The Story of Maths is a production of the BBC and Open University from 2008. The series tells the story of mathematics history in four episodes. The series is presented by Oxford Professor Marcus du Sautoy. The Language of the Universe  The first part of this series is The Language of the Universe. It is about how important mathematics is in daily life and how it has arisen. Du Sautoy visits Egypt, Mesopotamia and Greece. The Genius of the East  In the second episode, you tell Sautoy the development of mathematics in the East (China, India and the Middle East). China uses math in their construction projects and in India the number 0 is discovered. In the Middle East, techniques are being developed to solve square equations. The Frontiers of Space  This episode deals with European mathematical development. Algebra and geometry are connected and the calculus is developed by Isaac Newton. Gauss investigates how prime numbers are connected. To Infinity and Beyond  The latest episode contains Hilbert's 23 issues. These problems, presented on August 8, 1900, would be the challenge for mathematicians of the 20th century.
