Maria Petyt

Maria Petyt

Maria Petyt (Hazebroek, January 1, 1623 - Mechelen, November 1, 1677) was a Flemish mystica and author. She was born in Flanders and subsequently moved to Ghent where she lived in a beguinage. She went to Mechelen to the third (seemed) order of Carmel and took the name of Mary of Saint Theresia. Since 1657, Mary lived a hermit life.

Jan van Ballaert (alias Michaël of Saint Augustine) was the spiritual leader of Maria Petyt. He instructed her to write down her mystical experiences in an autobiography so that she could follow her mental development. After the death of Mary, he took on the issue of this autobiography. The book has become known under the (shortened) title: Maria Petyt's Life. Work
