Ion of the Riva


Ion de la Riva Guzman de Frutos (Caracas, Venezuela, January 28, 1959) is a Spanish diplomat, former ambassador to India and UNESCO.

Degree in Law and in Economics and Business, he entered the Diplomatic Career in 1983. He has been Director and Executive Advisor to the Cabinet of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Adviser and Director of the Cabinet of the Secretary of State for International Cooperation and Ibero-America. In 1991 he founded Casa America and was named Director of the American Tribune of the Casa de América Consortium. Later, he held the position of Cultural Counselor and Cooperation at the Spanish Embassy in Cuba, where he founded the Cultural Center of Spain. In 2001 he founded Casa Asia, a public consortium of which he was Director General until June 2007. From May 2004 to June 2007 he was Ambassador to the Special Mission for the Asia and Pacific Plan, and from that date until November 2010 he was the Ambassador of Spain in India. From November 2010 to March 2012 he was Ambassador of Spain to the Permanent Delegation to UNESCO in Paris. He has been the Director General of FIND from 2012 until 2014.
