The design of jewelry or design in jewelry, is the trade or profession of creating, making, making or drawing jewelry. It is a millenary practice, done in the past by the goldsmith and metallurgist, and evolved into an activity that generated millions of dollars during industrialization. The practice of design is developed on a scientific, technical and industrial basis, so the definition to exclude the craft of jewelry is excused.

Before an accessory is manufactured, it is designed and developed by a jewelry designer who possesses the knowledge and is qualified not only in technology and form-function relationship, but also in composition, combination, accessory lines, clothing and fashion.

Once the accessory has been defined layout and rehearsed, the prototype is carried out or directly to the manufacture with the necessary materials. The manufacturing process can be manual, as the designer is generally prepared to do it himself, or with machinery and mass-production tools, or a combination of both.

The career of jewelry design usually has a short training cycle, about three years, depending on the institution, and focuses on developing the skills to create and produce jewelry design pieces. It is a training with a great practical load and the accessories produced during the training are usually exposed and sold at fairs dedicated to this purpose.
