Ordnance Survey

Ordnance Survey (also known as OS) is the national mapping agency of the United Kingdom. It is in charge of the official British cartography, providing accurate and updated geographic information of the country, consulted by government institutions, companies and citizens in general. It is an executive agency and a non-ministerial department, with headquarters in Southampton.

OS was founded on June 21, 1791, although its history dates back to 1746, when the British Ministry of Defense began mapping the Scottish Highlands in the wake of the Jacobite rebellion.

Northern Ireland, being an integral part of the United Kingdom, is mapped by another separate government agency, Land and Property Services (formerly known as the Ordnance Survey of Northern Ireland).
