Revolt of the East

The Revolt of the East (in Portuguese Revolta do Leste, RDL) is an Angolan nationalist organization that fought for the independence of the country of Portugal under the leadership of Daniel Chipenda and mainly supported by the Ovimbundu.

In May 1966, Chipenda, then a member of the People's Liberation Movement of Angola, founded the Eastern Front, greatly expanding the MPLA's influence in Angola. When the Eastern Front collapsed, Chipenda and MPLA leader Agostinho Neto blamed each other. In 1972, the USSR joined the Chipenda group, as did Zambia and South Africa. Opposed to the Métis leadership of the MPLA and tired of the Soviet Union despite his support, Chipenda left the MPLA in 1973 with 1500 supporters, founding the East Revolt. He joined the National Liberation Front of Angola in September 1974 but his movement continued to exist and his forces sympathized with the MPLA in February 1975.
