Since their founding in 1910, the South African Armed Forces have carried the following successive names:

They all included an army, an air force, a navy and a health service.

Their peak strength during the Second World War was 140,000.

Of the 334,000 volunteers in the South African armed forces during the Second World War, there were 211,000 whites, 77,000 blacks and 46,000 coloureds or Indians. Nearly 12,000 of those engaged were killed in the theater of military operations. Notes and edit the code
