The Gunt River is a river in the south of Tajikistan. Its source, Yashilkul Lake, is located on the edge of the Pamir Alichur, a high plateau or pamir at an elevation of 3720m. The town of Khorog is located at the confluence of the Gunt with the River Panj River (the latter forming the border between Tajikistan and Afghanistan and also being known when Amu Darya, or in ancient Oxus).

The Gunt River and its affluent Shahdara is very seasonal, down in winter, but high in July and August due to the water melting snow. Its width varies from 10 to 50 meters and it is up to 1.5 meters deep. Due to the mountainous terrain, the river course is very fast, up 2 m / s in time. His bed is stony, and the benches are steep and precipitous. Often the stream occupies the entire river valley, but sometimes divides several courses.
