Dirk Bos


Dirk Bos (Groningen, September 13, 1862 - The Hague, May 6, 1916), was a Dutch politician (VDB) and businessman.

After doing the National HBS in Groningen (1874 - 1879), Dirk Bos studied mathematics and physics at the University of Groningen in 1879. In 1888 he subsequently graduated from the same university. From 1883 to 1893 he was a math teacher at Winschoten High School. In 1890 he was co-director (together with his brother-in-law J. Wilkens) of the Dutch Mortgage Bank in Veendam. From 1893 he co-operated a wholesaler in coffee and tea. From 1895 to 1901 he was a school supervisor of the district of Winschoten. He was also the initiator of the Steam Tramweg Society of Eastern Groningen and was, until his death in 1916, a commissioner of this company.

From 1893 to 1907 he was a member of the Winschoten City Council for the Liberal Union.

In 1901, Bos was co-founder of the Left-Liberal Liberal Democratic League (VDB). From 1901 until his death in 1916 he was a member of the Lower House for the VDB. He was also a group chairman. In 1913 he was the author, but failed to form a center-left cabinet with the SDAP (Social Democratic Labor Party).

Knight Order: Knight in the Order of the Dutch Lion, Commander in the Order of Orange-Nassau, December 16, 1911.

He held numerous other functions.
