Enbridge


Enbridge Inc. is a Canadian company based in Calgary, Alberta, whose main activity is transportation and distribution of crude oil and natural gas through pipelines. The company has about 5,400 employees in Canada, the United States and South America. It was founded as "Interprovincial Pipe Line" (IPL) in 1949 shortly after the discovery of the largest Canadian oilfield in Leduc, Alberta. The first pipeline was built to transport crude from western Canada to refineries in the eastern part of the country. In 1989 IPL was renamed Enbridge, which merges the names of "Energy" and "Bridge."

Enbridge owns its facilities in Canada and the United States, the largest pipeline network in the world. She owns "Enbridges Pipelines Inc." and a large number of subsidiaries in Canada and the United States. The network spans some 13,500 kilometers (8,500 miles) of pipeline delivering more than two million barrels (300,000 m3) a day of crude oil and other by-products. Enbridge is also the main manager of the Enbridge Income Fund.

It owns 25% of the shares of Compañía Logística de Hidrocarburos (CLH), a Spanish oil company that has the largest pipeline network in Western Europe, and 40% of its shares with the the Venezuelan company PDVSA.

Currently listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX) and New York Stock Exchange (NYSE).
