Fort Abercrombie was an American military outpost located on the west bank of the Red River in Abercrombie, North Dakota, built in 1858.
It was created to protect settlers settled in the Red River Valley from attacks from the Sioux, playing an important role in opening the Dakota Territory for colonization. It was twice sieged unsuccessfully by the Sioux in 1862.
With the signing of a treaty between the foreigners, the Chippewa and the Sioux in 1870, the fear of the Amerindians declined and the fort was abandoned in 1877. Part of the old facility is now a state park.
