Antarctica is one of the eight earthy eco zones. The continent has been too cold and too dry for most vascular plants for millions of years, and the flora currently consists of only a few mosses and algae. (plant species can survive in Antarctica because they are very small, they do not bother the wind). In the northernmost and western parts of the Antarctic Peninsula, the only two flowering Antarctic plants can be found: Deschampsia antarctica and Colobanthus quitensis.
Various Antarctic islands are also included in the Antarctic ecozone.
Millions of years ago, Antarctica was warmer and nighter, and there were several plant species on the island, which now only grow in the southernmost areas of South America.
On October 27, 2016 an international agreement was concluded in which the Rosszee was appointed as a protected nature reserve.
