Antonio Guzmán del Rosario


Antonio Guzman del Rosario (Guaza, Hato Mayor, Dominican Republic, year 1834 - July 1867), hero of Hato Mayor. Biography

Son of Valentín Guzmán and Laureana del Rosario and married to Laureana Vásquez, on November 23, 1860.

Guzman was one of the patriots of the eastern region of the country who went to Santo Domingo in the days of National Independence and to the South region as a liberating soldier. He obtained the rank of Captain. Antonio fought boldly to rid us of the Haitian yoke in the wars for Independence. On November 23, 1864, Guzman and Pedro Guillermo attacked Hato Mayor in the early morning hours surrounding the Spaniards, fighting in the battle of San Nicolas.

Guzman was a prominent patriot with his courageous sword against the annexationists in the Restoration War, participating in the assault to take the command of arms of El Seybo and from there proclaim the Restoration.

Antonio Guzman had a deep friendly relationship with Pedro Santana, such that he was chosen as administrator of his interests in the Guanuma camp. Guzman, being in Santiago, the government granted him the supreme authority in the East, which activated in a bloody way.

Antonio Guzman, by decree of May 16, 1867, General José María Cabral confirmed as division general and brigade. In 1865 Guzman became political chief of San Pedro de Macorís, to which he built the first hermitage in 1851 and in 1855 the commander of arms, General Antonio Guzman, donates a chapel of deck boards, which was roofed with yaguas and was blessed by Pedro Carrasco and Capeller.
