John Henry Osmeña

John Henry "Sonny" Osmeña (Cebu City, January 17, 1935) is a former Philippine politician. Osmeña was twice a member of the Philippine House of Representatives and was elected three times in the Philippine Senate. The Osmeñas are one of the well-known families that control the politics of the Philippines over the years. John Henry Osmeña is the grandson of former president Sergio Osmeña. Another grandson of Sergio Osmeña, Sergio Osmeña III, was in the Senate from 1995 to 2007. Also his father and John Henry's uncle, Sergio Osmeña Jr., was deputy and senator. His brother, Emilio Osmeña, was governor of the province of Cebu from 1988 to 1992.

Osmeña began his long political career as councilor of Cebu City from 1963 to 1967. In 1968 he became the successor to the city's governor of the city. In the 1969 election Osmeña won his first three-year term as a deputy, on behalf of the 2nd constituency of Cebu. Subsequently, he was elected as senator in 1971. However, when President Ferdinand Marcos announced a state of siege a year later, Senator Osmeña left for the United States, where he would be in exile to murder of opposition leader and senator Benigno Aquino Jr.

After returning, Osmeña was appointed Mayor of Cebu City in 1986 at the beginning of the government of Corazon Aquino. This he would stay until he won his second term in 1987 as a senator. After the three-year term, he was re-elected in the Philippine Senate in 1992. The candidates who ended at the election at the first twelve won a term of six years as senator. Osmeña, however, ended as 19th and was therefore chosen for three years. At the end of the term, he was elected for the second time as a delegate, this time on behalf of the third constituency of Cebu. Subsequently, he was elected in 1998 for his fourth term in the senate. At the end of his term, he made an attempt in the senate for the fifth time in 2004. This time, however, he finished in a fifth place, and thus three places too low for a re-election.
