A sensor, in the field of remote sensing space, is an instrument that collects radiative energy from the target scene and delivers a corresponding and measurable electrical signal. The equivalents in English are: sensor, and transducer.

By assimilation and although it does not deliver an electrical signal, the photographic chamber is considered as a sensor. The term "sensor" is sometimes misused to refer to the detector.
