Coordination link

Ammonia adduct and boron trifluoride Co-ordination bond, also known as dative covalent bond or bipolar bond, is a covalent bond in which each pair of electrons shared by two atoms is contributed by one of them. The atom that brings the pair of electrons is called the giver, and the receiver is called the giver. Typically a coordination bond is formed when a Lewis base donates a pair of electrons to a Lewis acid. Chemical complexes that are molecular structures in which a central atom (usually a metal cation) is bound to other molecules called ligands are also formed by this type of bond. This linkage description is characteristic of valence bond theory and has no place in molecular orbital theory or in the field theory of ligands of coordination complexes.
