Doña Juana sanitary landfill

Doña Juana Landfill is Bogotá's main garbage dump, located in the town of Ciudad Bolívar, near the tutelary hill of Doña Juana, between the sectors of Mochuelo Alto and Mochuelo Bajo. The landfill began operations on November 1, 1988 after a brief health crisis due to the accumulation of waste in the city after the old dumps of Gibraltar (near the present neighborhood Patio Bonito) and El Cortijo were closed.

The landfill has suffered some problems since its commissioning, the most notable being the landslide that occurred on September 27, 1997, when an accumulation of gases and leachates caused a landslide of more than 500,000 tons of waste that blocked the riverbed. River Tunjuelo. Another landslide happened on October 2, 2015 with 550,000 cubic meters of waste in the upper part of the operation.

Likewise, the urban expansion suffered by the city in recent years has led to the settlement of communities near the landfill, which have been affected by the odors and insects coming from it, especially in the villages of Mochuelo Bajo and Mochuelo Alto.
