Mlapa III was a Togo king, of the Ewe ethnic group, under whose reign the explorer Gustav Nachtigal, on July 5, 1884, imposed a German protectorate. Biography

Son of King Agomegan, his real name was Plakoo and his nickname derived from "Mlapa Etu ne Mlapa, ewui ne Mlapa" (Invulnerability to the rifle and the knife). His nickname explains that some had believed that they were two different characters. Prior to this date, the king controlled a territory around Lake Togo. He had had the right to collect taxes, of which one part was used by the kingdom and the other by the palace. He was a war chief who led his troops on the battlefield.
