A Red Thundercloud, Red Cloud of Thunder (Rhode Island, 1920 - Massachusetts, January 8, 1996), also known as Carlos Wéstez, was considered the last native speaker of the catawba language. Although there are accusations that Red Cloud of the Thunder may have been an impostor who claimed to speak the language, while the last speakers of the language would have died in the 1960s.
The Catawba (also known as Issa or Esaw) are a tribe of Native Americans, considered one of the most powerful East Sioux tribes, who lived in the South of the USA, along the border between the North and South Carolina. The Catawba began to settle in this region in the middle of the 17th century.
