Optical Storage Technology Association

The Optical Storage Technology Association (OSTA) is a trade association that promotes the use of optical recording products and technologies, and most notably is responsible for the creation and maintenance of UDF specification. Representing more than 85% of shipments of manufacturers and resellers of recordable optical products worldwide, it was incorporated (that is, created as a corporation) in 1992.

In 2007, OSTA led a campaign to encourage families and photographers to back up their digital photos to compact discs (CDs). Since it is estimated that one in seven computer hard drives crash during the first year, OSTA believes that it is dangerous to rely solely on storing irreplaceable photos on a hard drive only. Optical discs (CD, DVD, BD) are an inexpensive and reliable way to back up photos and make additional copies for enhanced protection and photo sharing with others.
