Communist Party of Iceland

The Communist Party of Iceland was an Icelandic political party that existed between 1930 and 1938. History

During the 1920s, a group of young members of the Social Democratic Party (Alþıðuflokkur) came into contact with the Communist International. In November 1922 they formed an internal current within the party called the Association of Young Communists (Félag ungra Kommunista). In 1926, the group was renamed the Sparta Social-Democratic Association (Jafnaðarmannafélagið Sparta). In 1928, at the behest of the Comintern, they decided to leave the Social Democratic Party and found another, the Communist Party of Iceland being born in 1930.

In 1938, another group from a new split of the Social-Democratic Party, joined them, forming the Party of Popular Unity-Socialist Party (Sameiningarflokkur alþýðu - Sósíalistaflokkurinn). The new party would leave the Comintern, although the communist sector continues to dominate the party.

In 1965, the Socialist Party entered into a coalition with a new split from the Social Democratic Party to form the People's Alliance, which in 1968 became a political party.
