Fobaproa

The Fund for the Protection of Savings Banks (Fondo Bancario de Protección al Ahorro), or Fobaproa, is a Mexico fund established in 1990 to solve liquidity problems of the country's banking system. Fobaproa was used mainly during the 1994-1995 economic crisis in order to prevent the Mexican banks from bankruptcy and thereby damage the Mexican economy. Due to corruption scandals that have come to light since then, the fund is increasingly under threat.

After measures were taken to prevent a new cirrhosis, Fobaproa was dissolved in 1998. The outstanding debt of the fund was added to the sovereign debt.
