Herman te Riele


Hermanus Johannes Joseph in Riele (The Hague, January 5, 1947) is a Dutch mathematician who worked until 1 January 2012 at the Center for Mathematics & Computer Science in Amsterdam with specialization in algorithms in discrete tomography, large numbers factorization, numerical cryptography and friendly numbers. He is known for his refutation, along with Andrew Odlyzko, of the suspicion of Mertens.

In 1970, Riele graduated from mathematics at Delft University of Technology. In 1976 he graduated from the University of Amsterdam in mathematics and physics. In 1985 he rebuked Mertens with Andrew Odlyzko. In 1987 he found a new upper limit for π (x) - Li (x) (see number of Shares).

Te Riele was appointed Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau on December 2, 2011. He received this award for his research on prime numbers and cryptography and for his many years of volunteer work for church and society. Externe link
