Hisham III

Hisham ben Muhammad or Hisham III, (in Arabic: المعتد بالله "هشام بن محمد), (Córdoba, 975 - Lérida, 1036). Twelfth and last Caliph of the Caliphate of Córdoba, from 1027 to 1031.

Brother of Abderramán IV, who was the seventh Caliph of the Cordovan caliphate, the Umayyad Hisham III occupied the Cordovan throne after remaining vacant for almost a year after the flight led by the previous caliph, the hammudí Yahya al-Muhtal. < / p>

Caliph proclaimed in Alpuente on June 4, 1027 adopted the title of Al-Muttad bi-llah (He who trusts in Allah), unable to enter Cordoba until December 1029 to be the capital in the hands of supporters of the hammudies.

Immediately he delegated the tasks of government to his prime minister, the vizier Hakam ben Said, who practically brought about the economic bankruptcy of the kingdom by imposing a tax increase that the ulemas considered contrary to the Koranic law. Therefore, they encouraged a popular uprising that, after assassinating the Vizier, led to the exile of Hisham III. He took refuge in Lleida, where he died in 1036. The Caliphate of Cordoba was put to an end and the period of the Taifa kingdoms was opened.
