Manuel Núñez de Gaona


Manuel Núñez de Gaona del Nero and Portocarrero (Medina de Rioseco, province of Valladolid, 1741 - Cartagena, August 14, 1813), Spanish sailor and military, brother of the illustrated writer and lawyer Ignacio Núñez de Gaona. Biography

Son of the Corregidor, Intendant and Knight of the Order of Carlos III, Juan Núñez del Nero, and of the daughter of the Count of Valparaíso María de las Nieves Gaona Portocarrero, took his seat on June 6, 1758 as midshipman at the Academy of Cádiz (number 1266); He was then Ensign and Captain of the frigate, Captain General of Cartagena, Lieutenant General of the Navy and Rear Admiral. He married Margarita Pascual de Pobil and García Menocal, a native of Havana and was a knight of the Order of Malta and a merit partner of the Royal Basque Society of Friends of the Country. In his honor the island today called Wolf of the Galápagos received its name, as well as in 1790 the today called Neah Bay (Washington) (Bahia Núñez Gaona).
