Sacred Congregation of Rites

The Sacred Congregation of Rites (in Latin Congregation for Sacri Ritibus and Caeremoniis) was a dicastery or department of the Roman Curia in charge of the government of the Catholic Church regarding the liturgy and the proposals of cases of sanctity for his beatification or canonization by the Supreme Pontiff.

It was established in Rome by Pope Sixtus V to examine the difficulties that were offered for the celebration of ceremonies and ecclesiastical rites. This congregation was discussing, approving or discarding the new prayers that were intended to be introduced in the church, the changes proposed in the ornaments and objects of worship. He understood and was subjected to processes relating to the beatification and canonization of the new saints.

Through the apostolic constitution of May 8, 1969, the Sacra Rituum Congregation, Paul VI reorganized his powers between the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Congregation for the Causes of Saints.
