Rope

The term rope refers to all ropes, called lines, which are used on ships. The lines for loading and unloading and the slopes are also for this purpose. The rope is attached to the roundabouts, sails and masts via pulleys, blocks, rings. The material of the line depends on the function and the purpose of the line. In the choice, things like strength, durability, moisture and maintenance play a role. The rope consists of two types: standing and running rope.

The standing rope is static, so does not move and is used to hold the masts and the rounds in place. Modern rigging is usually made of steel cable. Previously, the same material was used for standing and for running rope, but lubricated with tar to protect it from weather.

The running rope is used to control, trim, load and unload the sails and masts. The quality requirements on the material are simple: smooth and strong. The forces applied to it determine the thickness of the line. On transverse ships, the often large amount of ropes and lines is secured to multiple nail benches.
